|Title||Wolfgang Gabriel: Sonatina Op.79 (2003)|
|Instrumentation||Clarinet/Bass Clarinet Duet|
|Range||Extended-range instrument required for bass clarinet part.|
The Sonatina Op.79 for clarinet and bass clarinet was composed in 2003 by Austrian composer Wolfgang Gabriel (1930-), and dedicated to bass clarinetist Michael Davenport.
This challenging and dramatic three movement work, with a duration of about 18 minutes, would make an excellent recital piece for the college or professional duo. The first movement, Moderato, features some exciting technical passages interspersed amongst more calm imitative sections. The second movement, molto tranquillo e ugualmente, is in theme-and-variations form, gradually developing an expressive idea in 7/4 time. The final movement is a quick scamper marked Allegro Moderato.
